Mídias na Educação” (Media in Education) is one of the most important public policies on media literacy in Brazil.

The main goal of that project is to offer long life learning for teachers of schools spread all over the country, teaching how to use different media in the classrooms. The course has been using the so called platform “Pro-Info”, an online learning resource projected by the team of the Ministry of Education.

The basic idea of the course was tested in 2005 in a pilot study programme offered to 1,200 tutors. In 2006, a second version was offered to 10,000 teachers of public Elementary Schools. Now “Mídias na Educação” is an open resource at the Ministry of Education’s website.

The course is organized in seven modules. The first part deals with the key concepts which are important to understand both the content and the pedagogical approach used in the course. The second part is a tutorial which teaches how to use the website tools. The third part teaches how to organize and conduct projects and how to use specific media for specific purposes.

After the three basic modules, the learner starts to study each kind of media separately: print, TV, video, radio and digital platforms.

The print media module deals with school books, encyclopedia, newspaper and magazines (both print and online), comic strips, graphic novels, maps, advertisements and the so called “Cordel”, a kind of print literature genre from popular culture in the Brazilan Northeast.

The fifth module presents the history and the language of television, exploring methodologies for both reading and production of audio-visual content in the classroom. The next module works in a similar way, but dealing with radio.

Finally, the last module is a kind of educational software with teaches how the computer works, what softwares are and how to explore some internet resources with educational purposes. The platform of the seventh module is built like a virtual city with the following public spaces:

1. The school – place where the learner finds out the practical activities of each step

2. The library – place to get the tutorials for the study of the module

3. Shopping – place to get tutorials about how the internet in general works

4. Game room – place used for playing educational games specially designed for the seventh module

5. Cinema – a stock of videos which explores some of the seventh module contents

6. Cafe – place to meet other learners e discuss topics of the module.

The know-how of the programme “Mídias na Educação” has been developed by several universities such as University of São Paulo, Federal University of Pernambuco and University of Campinas, São Paulo State.

The projec is based on the idea of collaborative work, in wich different people with different backgrounds and responsabilities within the public educational system come together to carry out the job.
